Welcome to The Iris Garden
It is with great regret that I have come to the decision that after 20 years supplying iris to the UK and European gardening public, the time has come to close The Iris Garden's mail order business. There are a number of reasons, but only two main ones.
The first is that when I slipped in the garden in January 2012 I damaged my back so seriously that even now, 10 months later, I have not made a complete recovery and I find that it is no longer possible to spend as much time in the garden as I used to - and as I need to. Consequently, some matter (like weeding) get put on "hold" until absolutely necessary which, as you know, is not good for iris and these days, not good for my back.
Secondly, the summer of 2011 in the UK was bad enough, but summer 2012 was a disaster and the two consecutively have not provided the required conditions for the iris to grow well. I have done my best to supply customers with what they want, but it has resulted in a decimation of my stock, so much so that what is left will take at least 2 years to recover and grow to saleable size, but only if they are allowed to do so. It's a no brainer - unless we have the barbecue summer promised for 2011, but that's Mother Nature for you.
This may sound as though there will not be much to see in 2013. Far from it. There will be as many varieties to see as ever, but maybe not so many stems of each, so do not be put off if you want to visit.
Iris can still be ordered from us, but only by garden visitors and you must be prepared to come back to collect. We will still welcome visitors to the garden as we will continue to be the National Collection Holder of Space Agers, so give us a call anytime from mid-May and we can advise you what is in bloom and the best time to visit. Unless you have GPS you will also need directions as we are very, VERY rural!
